Muldersdrift & Where to Stay

Where to stay | The Cradle Moon Conservancy & Muldersdrift

An Important Note on Transport

If you are not residing at the 26 Degrees South BOHO Hotel and Conference Centre, which is located in the Cradle Moon Conservancy, you will require your own transport or pre-arranged transfers to and from your accommodation to 26 Degrees South, daily and after SACAIR social events.

Uber: In our experience, Uber is available from the Lanseria and OR Tambo International Airports (16 km to Lanseria Airport and 45 km to OR Tambo International Airport) and return – but not between the various hotels and lodges in the area.

If you choose to reside at Glenburn Lodge or Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge (nearest alternative accommodation) please check with your accommodation host whether daily transfers can be arranged to 26 Degrees South.

We furthermore recommend you venture not too far in selecting alternative accommodation as many of the roads in the area are not lit at night. (Nearest routes are M5 and R374)

Cradle Moon Conservancy & Muldersdrift

The Cradle Moon Conservancy, is a pristine 1500 hectare natural experience for both young and old as well as the ultimate athletes or those just seeking a breath of fresh air. The conservancy concentrates on restoring the indigenous fauna and flora in order to re-establish the natural Highveld biodiversity.

With over 50 kilometres of mountain biking and running trails the conservancy offers a special experience for every level of athlete, and with varied terrain from forests to mountains, as well as being home to over 20 species of wild animals, including rhino, Cradle Moon is unique.

Game drives and walks are also on offer for those seeking an authentic wild life experience on the full extent of the Conservancy.

Muldersdrift

For the ultimate in authentic South African getaways, choose to stay in the boutique hotels and accommodation in Muldersdrift. This particularly pretty part of the world used to be real countryside, way outside of Johannesburg, for escapees of the city lifestyle. Whilst today the small farms and smallholdings still exist, Muldersdrift has now become something of a village, its borders literally melded with the outer suburbs around Northgate.

Muldersdrift is a wonderful place to stay whilst in Johannesburg, particularly if your needs are to the north of the city. Your evenings are peaceful and tranquil yet your access to Fourways, Sandton, Randburg and even Pretoria is easy, and Lanseria airport is a mere 15 minutes away. There is beauty in the grasslands and natural indigenous vegetation in Muldersdrift, which lies in the heart of the Kromdraai Valley home to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site.

Visit the Wondercave, one of the show caves of the heritage site and the third largest cave in South Africa. It may consist only of a single chamber, but it’s huge – large enough to hold a rugby field – and visitors descend some 40 metres via an open lift from the surface, or you can abseil down. One can view some incredible formations that include cave pearls and pools, whilst stalagmites are up to 15 metres high. An added highlight to your trip could be the little observatory near Wondercave where astronomer Bill Hollenbach gives talks and shows about comets, meteors and perilous asteroids.

Not as obvious as the Sterkfontein caves and the discovery of Mrs Ples, there is a private nature reserve, the Cradle, that lies within the larger Cradle of Humankind. Explore indigenous forests and streams; and scour grassland for antelope, giraffe and zebras.
